Mia Thermopolis is set to make her big screen return... or is she?

For all those of us out there who consider ourselves to be very, very cute asparaguses - fear not! 'The Princess Diaries 3' is in the works.

Well, actually, maybe don't get too excited yet, because the main star of the original films hasn't been confirmed just yet.

Yes, the Anne Hathaway-led young adult series about a young woman who never fitted in at high school and then learns she is the sole heir to the fictional European kingdom of Genovia (and who eventually gets her long-awaited kiss from Chris Pine) is about to get a sequel.

But we still don't know if Hathaway will be back as Her Majesty Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Queen of Genovia. We do know, however, that it will be a direct sequel to 'The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement' from 2004, and will not be a reboot.

'The Princess Diaries 3', which is inspired by the popular book series of the same name, has long been rumoured to be in early stages of development - with news on the film dating as far back as 2016. Hathaway said she was keen to do a third entry in the series back then, so here's hoping she's still in the same frame of mind. We couldn't really imagine the film happening without her involvement (or Julie Andrews either, for that matter).

Debra Martin Chase, who produced the first two 'Princess Diaries' films, will be back to produce this new offering. Screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji is penning the script for the Disney sequel, a writer who has worked on 'Supergirl', 'Reacher' and the 'Quantum Leap' reboot.

Finger's crossed we get confirmation on the involvement of Anne Hathaway in this sequel - even though the Oscar winner is already extremely busy with seven upcoming films in the near future, we reckon she could make some time for the people of Genovia.

'The Princess Diaries' and its sequel are available to stream on Disney+.
