As we reported last night, Brie Larson is reportedly close to signing on to play Captain Marvel for the upcoming film on the Marvel character.

The character's been in the Marvel universe for quite some time and is considered a feminist icon, but it's only now that there's been any kind of movement on turning her into a film. It's a hugely influential story and, if it comes off, it could really be something. Of course, a lot of how good or bad it is falls down to the director behind the camera.

It's been reported that both Jennifer Kent of The Babadook fame and Niki Caro of the lesser-known Whale Rider are both being courted for the director's chair by Marvel Studios. The blockbuster juggernaut's made good use of taking in indie directors for their first studio film and, so far, it's worked out exceptionally well for all concerned.

James Gunn, for example, was working on indie comedies before he was handed the reins to Guardians of the Galaxy whilst Jon Watts is now signed on for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Likewise, Anthony & Joe Russo worked their way through some of the best television series before landing on Captain America: The Winter Soldier and, more recently, Civil War.

Jennifer Kent, we'd think, is the best option to direct Captain Marvel. The Babadook was easily one of the best horrors of the past ten years and confirmed Jennifer Kent as a hugely talented director. With a relatively small budget, The Babadook became a lasting experience. Imagine what she'd do with a Marvel-sized budget. Not only that, The Babdook was her first film. Think about that for a second. Her first film.

Marvel Studios, if you're reading this, hand the keys and the cheque-book over to Jennifer Kent right this instant and let her away.
