Multi-award winning animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli looks more and more likely to be shutting down its production arm.

In a recent announcement by the studio's producer, Toshio Suzuki, it announced that Ghibli are to take a "breather" from producing new material and possibly reorganise their studio.

However, a recent report from a source inside the studio has said that the Japanese animation studio will not be able to remain open for much longer. Given the high cost of producing their films and the lacklustre box-office performances, creating future products isn't feasible.

Studio Ghibli has produced Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo and many more. The studio received a number of international awards for its work and won an Oscar for Best Animated Film for Spirited Away in 2002.
