TV broadcaster Sky has added 'outdated attitudes' disclaimers to a number of movie titles. These include the original Disney animated features 'The Jungle Book' and 'Dumbo', family adventure movie 'The Goonies', and Hollywood classic 'Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Now, if you search for these titles in the Sky Cinema service, they come with a description that reads: “This film has outdated attitudes, language and cultural depictions which may cause offence today.”
In fact not only the original 'Jungle Book' comes with the warning. The 2016 live action remake does too.
Sixteen films on Sky Cinema now have an attached disclaimer. Christopher Walken’s 'Balls of Fury', Eddie Murphy’s 'Trading Places' and sci-fi/action sequel 'Aliens' have it too.
Other films with the disclaimer include the original Disney animation 'Aladdin'; 'Gone With the Wind'; 'Flash Gordon' and 'Lawrence of Arabia'.
There's also Ben Stiller’s 'Tropic Thunder'; 'The Jazz Singer' from 1927; Shirley Temple starrer 'The Littlest Rebel', and Disney’s 'The Lone Ranger'.
There is an increased awareness of potentially offensive and discriminatory material in the wake of Black Lives Matter.
HBO Max removed 'Gone With the Wind' in recent weeks. Meanwhile, 'Little Britain' has been removed from Netflix and other streaming services.
Disney+ also had disclaimers on a number of its titles when it launched.
