Although it's been nearly eight years since 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows', it looks like the long-awaited threequel is finally going to happen.

Variety has reported that a third movie in the Robert Downey Jr.-starring series is finally in the works. Interestingly, however, Guy Ritchie is no longer involved as director and has been replaced with 'Rocketman' director Dexter Fletcher.

The story goes that Warner Bros. were always keen on making 'Sherlock Holmes 3', however Downey Jr.'s busy schedule with the Marvel Cinematic Universe hampered any efforts. Now that he's officially out with the conclusion of 'Avengers: Endgame', he's finally free to make it happen. As well as this, Jude Law - who was also briefly in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Yon-Rogg in 'Captain Marvel' - is also set to return as Professor Watson as well.

The finale of 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows' pretty much set things up for a third movie, and while no plot details have been announced as of yet, it's understood that a release date of December 21st, 2021 has been set.
