Awards season contender Brooklyn set the Irish and UK box office on fire this passing weekend, nearing a few records in the process.

The film opened to over £432k in Ireland after its release on November 4th overtaking recent Irish hits “The Guard” (£408,711), “Angela's Ashes” (£397,978) , “In Bruges” (£344,481) and “Calvary” (£330,835). That's an Irish domestic gross of €605k, which is an incredible number for a small, local production.

Last year Mrs Brown's Boys D'Movie made a staggering €1.02m in Ireland alone in it's first few days; the big screen Brendan O'Carroll adaptation was produced through BBC Films, Penalty Kick Films, That's Nice Films.

The heavily fancied Oscar hopeful which was filmed in April of last year, took in over €1.4 million in the UK and Ireland, and should build on that over the coming weeks as word of mouth starts to spread.

Saoirse Ronan stars in the John Crowley directed drama about a young woman, forced to emigrate to New York in the 50s'. It's a very sweet, superbly acted drama that you'll like and your Ma will love.

John, who's also directed a bunch of episodes of True Detective, dropped into the office for a chat with our Brian last week. Well worth a butchers.
