Robert Eggers has clarified the role that Harry Styles was supposed to play in his potential upcoming project 'Nosferatu'.
Recently, it was revealed that Styles had signed on to the cast of the project. However, the singer and actor subsequently dropped out due to "scheduling issues". Anya Taylor Joy, who has appeared in multiple Eggers films now also signed up.
The project has been on hold since the pandemic began and has been in limbo ever since.
Speaking to Indie Wire this week, Eggers shed light on the film and Styles' involvement.
"Dude, I don’t know," Eggers said when asked about the status of the film. "It's fallen apart twice. I've been trying to get the word out because the word did carry that Harry Styles was going to be in the movie. I just want to be clear that he was going to be Hutter and not Nosferatu himself."
The film would be based on F.W Murnau's 1922 silent expressionist film which starred Max Schreck as Count Orlok, a vampire who plagues a town. It is widely regarded as the one of the most influential horrors in cinema history. The character of Hutter is a travelling estate agent, who ends up visiting the vampire's castle.
However, Eggers revealed that the project has been difficult to get off the ground, leading him to think that it could even be cursed.
"I've been trying so hard," Eggers said of his attempts to make the film. "And I just wonder if Murnau's ghost is telling me, like, you should stop." He added, "I don’t know. Maybe Murnau’s telling me I don’t have the right."
Eggers' current film 'The Northman' is out in cinemas this Friday, April 15.
