Pierce Brosnan's characterisation of James Bond was only going to be difficult to reconcile against the modern version.

Coming off the back of Timothy Dalton's gritty, ahead-of-its-time Bond, Brosnan brought some of Roger Moore's sensibilities to bear whilst still keeping a flash of that old Connery menace. Of course, that all went to s**t when Die Another Day and an invisible car happened. Still, his Bonds deserve more praise than they get.

However, he's been quite vocal about his time as Bond, admitting once during an interview that he's never actually watched of his films. More recently, he's discussed Daniel Craig's take on the character and the most recent effort, Spectre.

Brosnan described Spectre as "neither fish nor fowl. It’s neither Bond nor Bourne. Am I in a Bond movie? Not in a Bond movie?" Well, that's debatable, but yes, there are flashes of Jason Bourne and there have been since Casino Royale, in fairness.

"I was looking forward to it enormously... I thought it was too long. The story was kind of weak - it could have been condensed. It kind of went on too long. It really did." OOF, BROSNAN. OOF.

Brosnan also discussed Craig's recent comments about returning for another one, saying that " the guy was just fairly banjaxed by playing it. By the time you finish making a Bond movie, you don't want to hear the name, see the name or have anything to do with it because you just want to go to ground."

In fairness to Brosnan, nobody would be able to empathise with Craig better than him. He lived that life, so it's clear he has a measure of compassion for Craig's comments about wanting to slash his wrists. Brosnan's advice to keep Craig in the role was more telling, as well.

"Give him another year off here, and he'll be ready to rock and roll for sure... He's a mighty warrior, and I think he found a great sense of himself in this one with the one-liners and a nice playfulness there. Just get a tighter story, and he’ll have another classic."

Can't argue with that, really.
