Yes, we're actually facing down a Power Rangers reboot next year.
It's bad enough we've got to contend with the possibility of Donald Trump being US President, global warming, now we've got a Power Rangers reboot in the works by the guy who did Project Almanac.
For those that don't know or didn't have a childhood, Power Rangers was a huge phenomenon in the mid-'90s and involved a racially diverse team of teenagers who were embued with powers that turned them into high-kicking ninjas. They had to fight off a swole bodybuilder who had his innards turned out called Lord Zedd and a woman called Rita Repulsa, whose costumes could have inspired RuPaul's Drag Race.
Anyway, it was terrible and like a lot of things in the '90s, it's somehow become a thing again. Anyway, the casting has been completed for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Entertainment Weekly got the first shot of them together, sans costumes.
Here it is.
First off, would kids actually give a crap about Power Rangers in this day and age? Of course not. We've all moved on. Sure, we can make funny jokes about the MegaZord and the overacting that was on display, but they can't seriously think this thing has legs. Can they? It's a big ask, to say the least.
It's going to be pretty confusing when the stats come back and its all twenty-somethings turning up at the cinema to watch this bemusedly. As for Elizabeth Banks - who's playing the aforementioned Rita Repulsa - director Dean Israelite talked about just how crazy it all is. "It's very exciting that we got (Banks), and I think what she loves is the opportunity to really embrace the insanity and deliciousness of Rita Repulsa in terms of how weird and wonderful that character was, and really dive into and consume that character."
This is going to be car-crash cinema and we genuinely cannot wait. Power Rangers hits cinemas in 2017.
