The Oscar race is getting interesting - and fun! Yesterday The Academy announced a whopping nineteen movies that are in the running for Best Animated Film which we all know is the cutest, most important, best category of the whole thing.

Included in the long-list are crowd-pleasers Monsters University, Cloudy with a Change of Meatballs 2, Despicable Me 2, The Smurfs 2 (that's a lot of 2s...) Turbo and, well, just about every single animation that has been released recently and also some that haven't even come out yet (Frozen and Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises).

Filling out the list are:The Croods, Epic, Ernest and Celestine, The Fake, Free Birds, Khumba, The Legend of Sarila, A Letter to Momo, O Apóstolo, Planes, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie — Rebellion and Rio: 2096 A Story of Love and Fury.

I suppose kiddie movies are treated like actual kiddies by The Academy - everyone goes away with something! Which in this case is, eh, an Oscar nom.

The short-listed nominations for all categories will be announced on January 16th with the ceremony taking place in March.
