How do you follow a film like The Force Awakens?

That's the question in front of Rian Johnson, whose previous films have been marked by unique stories and visuals, huge attention to detail and a truly independent spirit. It's hard to imagine how a director could go from something like Looper and Brick to the sequel to one of the biggest films of the decade, but here we are.

In a recent interview, Oscar Isaac - better known as fan-favourite Poe Dameron - talked about Rian Johnson's take on the series and just how markedly different Episode VIII will be to The Force Awakens. "In some ways it feels like we’re making an independent film. Certain things we get to play with, this kind of intimacy that we get to find, it’s special. It’s been really fun."

Dameron, sorry, Isaac went on, saying that "Rian is definitely going to places and investigating things that haven’t really been done in the Star Wars universe. For me, it’s so fun getting to explore different things that I wouldn’t have expected in this universe."

This echoes what both Lawrence Kasdan and JJ Abrams have said about Episode VIII, with Abrams even going so far as to say that the script is so good, he wished he could direct it himself.

Production is currently ongoing with Episode VIII, with filming set to take place in Brow Head and Ceann Sibeal before the end of the year.
