For The Kids:

Batman Forever: Saturday 6.50pm Channel 4
You might've lost some respect for Jonathon Ross in the 90's when he called this film "one of the greatest films of all time" but in his defence he was writing for The Mirror at the time. So, while it's most definitely not "great" or quite frankly, even particularly good, it's still fun in a stupid, if inherently camp way. Batman is played by Val Kilmer, who seems to think he's continuously posing for an aftershave commercial, while Chris O Donnell joins the party with the ill-advised addition of Robin. A cracking soundtrack, and a tongue firmly pressed against its cheek should see an hour and a half stroll by for the kiddies. Worth seeing just to examine how far Chris Nolan has taken the franchise.

For The Dads

Castaway: Saturday 9.35pm RTE 1
Tom Hanks was on a serious roll when he reteamed with his Forest Gump director Robert Zemeckis for this ponderous and intriguing watch. Hanks plays a by-the-book FedEx employee who is involved in a plane crash that sees him as the sole survivor. Washing up on a desert island, he has only his beloved Wilson (a basketball) for company for several years. It's a fantastic performance from Hanks, who truly commits to the role; shedding countless pounds between a gap in production to ensure authenticity. That's a good thing too, as the multiple Oscar winner is the only person on screen for a large part of the running time. Well worth tuning in for if you haven't already seen it

For The Cinephiles

Half Nelson: 10.50pm BBC 1
Ryan Gosling picked up an Oscar nomination for starring in this independent gem, about an idealistic and brilliant teacher, who also happens to be a crack addict. It's both subversive and engaging, and you will find it difficult to take your eyes of its star for the majority of the running time. Heartbreaking in parts, it's ultimately rooted firmly in reality and directed with a loose, but grittily realised style by first time director Ryan Fleck. There's also a stunning debut for inexperienced, but naturally gifted youngster Shareeka Epps. Well worth staying up for.
