What the hell is Nicolas Cage doing? Is he purposely trying to sabotage his own career by starring in a barrage of remakes and poorly realised action films!? Next was one of the worst films of last year, and The Wicker Man an absolute travesty. Why then, has the sometime talented actor decided to remake the messed-up cop thriller Bad Lieutenant? A lot of questions dear reader I know, but I’m severely perplexed damn it! The original starred Harvey Keitel as a seriously dodgy cop, who searches for moral redemption when investigating the raping of a young nun. It was an uneven, if effective film that was notable for a stunning turn from Keitel. The only thing making this production mildly interesting for me is that Werner Herzog is directing, and he’s a mad German. Mad German’s are funny - providing they’re not like, take over the world mad, obviously.
