Yesterday, we looked back on the movie sequels we had to wait ages to see, and just loved in the end.

Now we're looking at upcoming movie sequels that seem to be well and truly on their way.

Here are our picks of the film follow-ups we’ve patiently been awaiting for years, and what their current production status is.

Legally Blonde 3

The upcoming threequel imagines Elle Woods as a 40 year old, having been a 21 year old law student in the first movie. Reese Witherspoon will of course be back to play the movie icon. 'The Office' actress and writer Mindy Kaling is currently penning the script for it with 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' creator Dan Goor.

Enchanted 2

The sequel to 'Enchanted', titled 'Disenchanted', arrives 14 years after the first film, and is said to be shooting right here in Ireland. Both Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey are reprising their roles as the animated princess Giselle and cynical New York lawyer she falls for, Robert Phillip. It’s filming this year around late spring and through summer. Adam Shankman ('Hairspray'), who's also helming 'Hocus Pocus 2' for Disney (see below), is directing. Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz will also be back to write new songs for the film.

Chicken Run 2

The first 'Chicken Run', from Aardman Studios, who also did 'Wallace and Gromit', hit cinemas in 2000. Thus fans have been waiting quite a while for the sequel. It is still the highest-grossing stop motion animated film in history. The film is going to Netflix. However it looks like there will be a new cast with neither Mel Gibson nor Ginger's voice actress Julia Sawalha returning.

Beverly Hills Cop 4

In an interview for 'Coming 2 America', Eddie Murphy confirmed that it’s looking good for 'Beverly Hills Cop 4'. They just have to nail down the script. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who successfully revived the Bad Boys series with 'Bad Boys for Life', will direct. The last time we saw the sharp and fast-talking detective Axel Foley was in 1994’s 'Beverly Hills Cop 3'. The first crime comedies hit cinemas in 1984 and 1987.

Hocus Pocus 2

Disney+ are bringing back a whole slew of movie franchises with a sequel to 'Honey I Shrunk the Kids' and threequel to 'Sister Act' in the works. But perhaps the most anticipated one might just be 'Hocus Pocus 2'. It comes 27 years after the original. Bette Midler recently said in an interview they’re currently trying to get as many of the original cast members for it back.

The Matrix 4

Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss return as New and Trinity, respectively, in the fourth 'Matrix' movie. They are joined by Jada Pinkett Smith and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in a lead role (believed to be Morpheus). Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris and Jonathon Groff play supporting cast members. Lana Wachowski (co-creator and co-director of the franchise with her sister Lilly) will direct the new 'Matrix' sequel. It hits cinemas this December.
