Michael Mann is to direct a pilot for American cable network HBO, that Deadwood creator David Milch will write.

The seminal helmer of the likes of Heat, The Insider and most recently Public Enemies, will make the move to the small screen to helm the show, Luck. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will centre around the world of horse racing and gambling, while also being "provocative." Well, if it's provocative like True Blood, that just means lots of riding.

There is no guarantee that the show will make it to series, but given the pedigree behind the camera, and the talent that it will attract in terms of cast, I'd be shocked if it wasn't picked up. Mann was a producer on Miami Vice for a couple of years in the 80s, before directing the underrated feature version in 2006. Milch also created John from Cincinnati and NYPD Blue.
