Mel Gibson has apparently knocked back the chance to star in Leathal Weapon 5, despite the presence of Shane Black as an apparent writer/director. Helmer of the previous four, Richard Donner, thinks it has something to do with him: "Mel turned it down," Donner said. "I would like to think that Mel turned it down because I wasn't involved. Knowing Mel, I would like to think that. Would that be the kind of thing he does? It sure would be." In fairness, Dick (can i all ya Dick? Thanks) you didn't exactly do a stellar job with the last couple. Granted, you directed some classics in your day (Superman, The Gonnies); but why not gracefully pass over the torch to Black, who showed stunning promise with his directorial debut, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Now, returning to his signature role of Martin Riggs would not be a good idea under normal circumstances; but Shane Black wrote the script on spec, and the studio STILL bought it. It has to be good. C'mon Mel, even Joel Silver is coming back...
