In the wake of all of the huge Marvel Cinematic Universe announcements last weekend, there's another one that's accidentally come out of the crypt that's heavily guarded by Kevin Feige and co.

It might have been left out of the recent MCU line-up announcements from the San Diego Comic-Con, but apparently, an 'Eternals' sequel is actually happening.

Patton Oswalt, who appeared in the post-credit scene of the first film as the voice of Pip alongside Harry Styles' Starfox, revealed the news on the US talk show 'Today'. However, contrary to what Oswalt actually says on the morning show, there hasn't been an official 'Eternals' announcement from Marvel just yet. Is it too late for Marvel Studios to get out their dart gun?

He said: "They have announced there’s going to be an Eternals sequel. Chloé Zhao is going to direct it. So hopefully, there will be more adventures of Starfox and Pip."

Should the news be true, it's an interesting development for Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige to go in. The first film introduced a group of immortal beings who have lived on Earth for thousands of years, shaping history and civilisations without the knowledge of everyday people and starred Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Barry Keoghan and more.

However, the film wasn't very well-received by critics and fans alike and is currently the lowest-rated Marvel movie ever. Director Chloé Zhao attempted to create a more sprawling, in-depth look at these new Marvel superheroes but in doing so created a film that clocked in at least a half-hour too long, failed to dig deep enough into the characters, and all-round left a slightly bored taste in our Marvel mouths.

With Zhao supposedly back on board the not-yet-Marvel-confirmed 'Eternals' sequel, it might take a lot of convincing for casual fans to head to the theatres to see this follow-up.

There are a number of other team-ups on the way in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the eagerly-anticipated introduction of The Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, The Marvels, and two more Avengers films.
