The Light House Cinema in Smithfield has been issued with an official wind-down order. The landlord of the premises, John Flynn, defended his decision to double the rent on the arthouse cinema from €100,000 to €200,000 by stating that he was also subsidising the cinemas day-to-day operations. Legal representatives of the cinema said that they had hoped the Smithfield area would develop but its growth has been slower than expected and a liquidator has now been appointed. The cinema opened in mid-2008 and was awarded government grants of €1.75million, despite this the business has been deemed insolvent.
