It looks like things are progressing nicely for Sony's remake of 1990 hit movie Flatliners, as original cast member Kiefer Sutherland has signed up for the flick following some scheduling difficulties that have now been worked out.

The movie, about a group of medical students who experimented with near-death experiences, also starred Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Billy Baldwin and Oliver Platt.

According to Deadline, Sutherland will play a seasoned doctor in the reboot, and will join the current cast of Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemens.

No word yet on whether any more of the original cast will be returning. We can't imagine that Julia Roberts will be too keen, given that her and Sutherland started up a relationship on this movie, got engaged, with the wedding cancelled just days before. Apparently something came out about Kiefer being caught with a stripper. But, eh, maybe that's all water under the bridge now??

Flatliners goes into production later this week, and is being directed by Niels Arden Oplev (the Swedish Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, TV’s Mr. Robot) with a script by Ben Ripley (Source Code), while the movie is being produced by Laurence Mark and Michael Douglas (who also produced the original movie).
