Invasion Of The Body Snatchers is one of those films that can, given the right circumstances and creative team behind it, be successfully remade again and again.
There was the '56 version, Philip Kaufman's excellent version in 1978 with Donald Sutherland and Leonard Nimoy, Abel Ferrara's 1993 version, and then the most recent version with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig which flopped everywhere in 2007.
Deadline now reports that a new remake is underway with The Walking Dead screenwriter David Leslie Johnson attached to write and veteran producer John Davis to shepherd the whole thing. The only part that's missing - and will determine whether this actually works or not - is the director.
Obviously, Warner Bros. are intending to shop the script to directors, however there's no word yet on who they've specifically targeted. For us, we'd love to see someone like True Detective's Cary Fukunaga or Green Room's Jeremy Saulnier to take it over and give a distinctive flair. The source material is so malleable that it really can bend to whatever shape they want.
The '78 version, for example, was a commentary on cult leaders like Jim Jones whilst the '56 version was more about McCarthyism and HUAC - so there's definitely something to go on, given the current political climate in the US.
No release date has been set so far for Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.
