Whoever said that the best things in life are free obviously wasn't a movie buff. It's utterly brilliant then, that the IFI have just announced their Open Day for Saturday, June 14 where fans of the silver screen can enjoy a fantastic pick of film gems for the great sum of €0!

The home of film in Ireland is opening its doors to the public for an entire day of specially selected films, from sneak peeks of new upcoming releases to long-standing audience favourites and less well-known but still fabulous classic flicks.

Hitting the screen are classics Hal Ashby’s Harold and Maude; Federico Fellini’s 8 ½ and Woody Allen’s The Purple Rose of Cairo. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford with Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck considered by Mark Kermode as ‘one of the most wrongly neglected masterpieces of its era’ will also be shown.

The IFI Open Day sneak previews are Believe - the fictional story of legendary Man U football manager Sir Matt Busby helping a wayward boy achieve his dreams of football greatness; Boyhood, Richard Linklater's extraordinary new 12 year film project that captures a young actor Ellar Coltrane from ages 6 to 18; and Lilting, a cross-cultural story of friendship and acceptance in the wake of grief.

Classe Tous Risques, described by Tavernier as ‘one of the best French gangster films’, 1929 British melodrama Piccadilly, and sci-fi classic Earth vs. the Flying Saucers are picks of the rarely-seen bunch along-side wry Irish comedy Snakes and Ladders by Trish McAdams which is preserved in the IFI Irish Film Archive.

For a chance to see your favourite film from the last year in the IFI (or one you missed) don't forget to cast your vote for the IFI Audience Choice slot www.ifi.ie/openday before 9th June (eek, that's today!)

Yes, tickets are free but be warned, they are like gold-dust and will be distributed on a first-come-first-serve-basis in person from 11am on Saturday, June 14.
