'Godzilla vs. Kong' has proven a smash hit for Warner Bros. as they're turning back to its director for the next installment of the franchise.

Adam Wingard, whose prior credits include 'The Guest', 'V/H/S' and 'You're Next, is in talks to helm the next MonsterVerse installment, which would focus on Kong.

Well, specifically, it would focus on his progeny, as the film may be titled, reports THR, 'Son of Kong'.

According to the publication, its predecessor was originally going to wrap up the MonsterVerse, given 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' underperformed at the box office.

But then 'Godzilla vs. Kong' took everyone by surprise making $400 million globally.

That makes it the highest grossing Hollywood-produced movie released since the pandemic.

Moreover, it has yet to open on the big screen in such major markets as the UK, Brazil and Japan.

It's the second best performing MonsterVerse movie after 'Kong: Skull Island' made $566 million at the box office in 2017.

Arguably that's why they're returning to the monkey man as opposed to the lizard guy in the next one.

Of course, Wingard is very much in demand at the moment.

He's looking to make a live-action adaptation of 'Thundercats' and talk of a 'Face/Off' spin-off/reboot has also been circulating.

So as with most things, watch this space.
