The shortlists for the first ten categories of next year's Academy Awards have been announced - and it's good news for the Irish. Again.

Two songs from 'Flora and Son', the Dublin-set film starring Eve Hewson and directed by John Carney ('Once') has been shortlisted in the Best Original Song category, with hopes that at least one will get the nod for a nomination.

There's still around a month to go until the actual nominations are revealed on January 23rd, with many crossing their fingers for a nod for Cillian Murphy. However, it's good news that there will (hopefully) be some Irish representation at this year's Oscars.

Both songs were co-written by Carney and Scottish songwriter and musician Gary Clark.

Three songs from the 'Barbie' soundtrack were also nominated, including 'I'm Just Ken' and Dua Lipa's 'Dance the Night'.

The categories announced yesterday were International Feature Film, Documentary, Sound, Original Score, Original Song, Makeup and Hairstyling, Visual Effects, Live-Action Short Film, Documentary Short Subject, and Animated Short Film.

In other pleasing news for Irish film, Yorgos Lanthimos's 'Poor Things', which was produced by Irish company Element Pictures, has been shortlisted in three of the categories announced so far: Make-up and Hairstyling, Original Score and Visual Effects.

The 2024 Oscars take place on March 10th in Los Angeles.
