For people of a certain age, Donnie Darko was the defining film of their generation.
Richard Kelly was only twenty-four years old when he made the film, and since then has had something of a storied career since then. The Galway Film Fleadh's programme was announced last night and nestled in among all the great Irish films on show is a screenwriter's masterclass with one Richard Kelly in attendance. As well as this, both Donnie Darko and Kelly's 2006 follow-up Southland Tales will be screened at the festival.
Kelly was recently quoted in an interview with IndieWire as possibly entertaining the idea of a sequel to Donnie Darko - not the unofficial S.Darko which he actively campaigned against - and returning to the world of filmmaking, as well as the differences between funding independent films now compared to ten years ago. The screenwriting masterclass takes place on Thursday, July 13th at 10AM in the Radisson Blu Hotel down in Galway, whilst Donnie Darko screens at the Town Hall Studio on Saturday, July 15th at 8.30PM and Southland Tales screens on Sunday, July 16th at 1.30PM also at the Town Hall Studio.
