Detective Pikachu hits theatres in three months time and is based on a Nintendo 3DS game that first came out in Japan in 2016.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, production company Legendary has enlisted Oren Uziel with the task of penning a script for the sequel.
Uziel's previous screenwriting credits include 22 Jump Street and The Cloverfield Paradox. He is also behind Sonic the Hedgehog, another 2019 movie release based on a popular video game.
There's no word yet on what direction Uziel plans on taking for the sequel's screenplay.
Detective Pikachu is one of our most highly anticipated movies for 2019.
The first trailer for it amassed millions of views within days of its release.
Ryan Reynolds voices the eponymous crime-solving electric mouse while Justice Smith plays his human pal. They join up to find Smith's missing father. Maybe the follow-up will see the pair go on further adventures?
