Thor has received generally positive reviews as it bows today in America - a week after its Irish debut. USA Today wrote "Though it may not leave a lasting impression once the lights go up, Thor is lighthearted and thunderously good fun." But it did have its naysayers, with The Austin Chronicle saying it "suffers from Iron Man 2 syndrome", meaning "too much backstory, too many subplots and character introductions."

Also opening was the romantic flick Something Borrowed, which has generally been slated by critics. The Los Angeles Times hated the film, but stated that "(John) Krasinski is, once again, the best thing about a romantic comedy." While other outlets also hated the film, but noted that lead Ginnfer Goodwin "radiates" despite the contrived set-up and characters.

Opening in limited release was Mel Gibson's first film since the highly publicised battle with his ex, The Beaver. The mental health drama is generally receiving raves, but Gibson is taking most of the plaudits. The Toronto Star wrote that "The entire cast delivers, but none more so than Gibson."
