Chronicle helmer Josh Trank will, like Godzilla director Gareth Edwards, direct one of the spin-off films in the Star Wars franchise.

According to a press release from LucasFilm, Trank, who is currently at work on the Fantastic Four reboot, is set for a film on an unspecified character from the universe to be made in the next two years.

LucasFilm said. "We're thrilled to welcome Josh into the family. He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX."

Trank was equally excitable, saying "The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time."

This is a very smart move from LucasFilm and Disney; they're rebuilding the franchise and at the same time making something new by getting young, talented in-demand directors and locking them down early doors so they can help develop their vision.

With JJ Abrams the anchor of the series, this could be something special.
