The director of the upcoming 'Captain Marvel 2' starring Brie Larson will be Nia DaCosta, Deadline reports. She will be the first black female director of a Marvel movie.

Nia DaCosta already has a number of impressive credits to her name.

She directed and co-wrote the much-anticipated upcoming horror movie 'Candyman'.

She also helmed 'Little Woods', starring Tessa Thompson and Lily James.

DaCosta helmed episodes of the third series of 'Top Boy', which debuted on Netflix, also.

According to reports, the studio met with several candidates before selecting her for the gig.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck directed the first 'Captain Marvel' to major box office success. It grossed over $1 billion globally last year.

Megan McDonnell, a story editor on the Disney+ series 'WandaVision', penned the script for the 'Captain Marvel' sequel.

While the first film was set in the 1990s, its follow-up takes place in the present day.

'Captain Marvel 2' is set to hit cinemas on July 8, 2022.
