The 64th Cannes Film Festival is kicking off in the South of France tomorrow, and being that I've already been to Brazil this year for work, entertainment.ie decided not to send me to report on it. But I'm not bitter... OK I am a bit.
Anyhow, there are some big premieres happening at the festival this year, but few bigger than Terence Malick's highly anticipated mindbender, The Tree of Life. As if the prospect of seeing another film from the man widely regarded as a master of the art form wasn’t mouth-watering enough, both Brad Pitt and Sean Penn star - the former playing the latter's father. I know, that gene pool got seriously f**ked up at some point.
Two Irish films will also premiere flicks at the festival; helmer Rebecca Daly will compete for the coveted Camera D'Or Award for her debut, The Other Side of Sleep. The film stars Antonia Campbell as a sleepwalker drawn to the family of a murdered girl.
Also making headlines in Cannes this week will be Bono and Ali Hewson's daughter, Eve Hewson, who stars opposite Sean Penn in the partly Irish shot film, This Must Be The Place. The 19 year old, who popped up in the video for The Script's For The First Time, makes her feature debut as a "goth punk" teen. Her folks are tipped to be on the red carpet to support her. The festival runs from May 11th until the 22nd.
Good luck to all Irish film people out there either trying to sell their work, or who are in competition.
