The lauded actor will join DCEU's next instalment in an unconfirmed role - but rumours suggest its a certain supervillain.

Brendan Fraser has found his newest blockbuster. The DC Extended Universe's 'Batgirl' has reportedly cast the actor in the role of Firefly in the action film.

Although unconfirmed for now, Deadline reports the star of 'The Mummy' and 'Bedazzled' will suit up as the supervillain who has a love for starting fires. The deranged pyromaniac has made a number of appearances in DC's TV series in the past, including 'The Batman' cartoon series during the 2000s and The CW's 'Arrow' live-action series.

Brendan Fraser is the latest star to join 'Batgirl', which will see actress and songwriter Leslie Grace take on the mantle of the titular superhero. More well-known for her singing career, Grace also played the role of Nina Rosario in Jon M. Chu's musical 'In The Heights' from earlier this year. Jacob Scipio, who played the villain in 'Bad Boys For Life', is also part of the cast of the blockbuster.

'Batgirl' will be the very first DCEU film to premiere exclusively on HBO Max rather than hit cinemas. It is due for release in 2022, and will be helmed by 'Bad Boys For Life' directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Christina Hodson ('Birds Of Prey') penned the script, while Kristin Burr ('Cruella') is on board as a producer.

Brendan Fraser, whose acting career seemed to peter out in the last number of years, has had a huge resurgence this year. He is set to star in Darren Aronofsky's upcoming thriller drama 'The Whale for A24, and he will also star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro for Martin Scorsese's forthcoming project 'Killers Of The Flower Moon' for Apple TV+ later this year.
