The Day The Earth Stood Still bagged a solid opening of $31 million this passing weekend in America, as moviegoers ignored the scathing reviews and headed along to see the misfiring event movie. Elsewhere, only other new opening was family comedy Nothing Like The Holidays, which coined a mediocre $3.5 million to place in seventh spot. The next week or so see's a barrage of releases for the American public to stew over, as Jim Carey looks to retake the mantle of comedy king from the Will Ferrell's and Seth Rogen's of the this world. Also, awards season is in full swing, as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button opens wide on Christmas Day and others like Milk and Slumdog Millionaire expand their number of screens.
