Om Puri, primarily known to Western audiences as George Khan from East Is East and Nahari from David Attenborough's Gandhi, has passed away.

Puri starred in a total of 306 films across his career, many of them in his native India where he was a household name. Puri came to prominence with Western audiences in Roland Joffe's 1992 film, City Of Joy, and the highly-acclaimed 1999 comedy-drama, East Is East. More recently, Puri starred in the BBC's adaptation of The Cantebury Tales and The Hundred-Foot Journey opposite Helen Mirren.
