It can’t be too big a surprise after the popularity garnered from Suicide Squad’s star-crossed/messed up central lovers that the characters are getting their own spin-off movie.

Moreover, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto, who played Harley Quinn and Joker in last year’s supervillain/antihero movie, will be reprising their roles for the new film.

The news comes hot on the tale that Warner Bros and DC are also working on a Joker origins movie, which will not star Leto, as part of a new banner which will see WB expand the canon properties of DC.

Weirder still, they seem to be trying to make the Joker-Harley Quinn spin-off romantic, enlisting Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who direct and exec produce NBC’s dramedy This Is Us, and whose past credits include Crazy, Stupid, Love and I Love You Philip Morris, to direct it.

The logline for the planned film says that it will be a “criminal love story”, while an insider has described it as “an insane and twisted love story. When Harry Met Sally on benzedrine.” Fifty Shades fans should love it.

Despite being critically panned, Suicide Squad was a box office hit and there’s a sequel in the works as well as a spin off based on the female DC villains called Gotham City Sirens. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the plan is for this Joker-Harley Quinn spin-off to go into production right after the Suicide Squad sequel, and it will therefore be produced before Gotham City Sirens.
