Since acquiring 20th Century Fox, Disney has inherited a whole bunch of movie franchises. Among those was 'Planet of the Apes' so we can't be surprised they're doing some sort of reboot/sequel to the franchise.
After all the rebooted 'Planet of the Apes' series in the 2010s (which included 'Rise of...', 'Dawn of...' and 'War for...') was a major success. Altogether, the trilogy made €1.68 billion. The latter two, directed by Matt Reeves, earned particularly high critical praise. Reeves has since gone on to helm 'The Batman'.
According to THR, Wes Ball, best-known for helming 'The Maze Runner' series, will develop and direct the next 'Planet of the Apes' feature.
Ball has also proven capable of making big bucks. His series, though widely panned outside the original, made close to $1 billion worldwide, produced on modest budgets. As with 'Apes', the YA franchise is also set in a dystopian world.
THR writes: "The move makes 'Apes' one of the first historically significant Fox titles to get the redevelopment treatment since Disney's acquisition of the storied studio."
It is not yet known whether the film will be a new reboot or a sequel. It is also unknown how it will relate to the original film series, which began with the 1968 Charlton Heston starrer 'Planet of the Apes'.
Here's hoping they'll get Andy Serkis involved again in some capacity.
