Anne Hathaway is said to be in talks for a movie adaptation of the hit Andrew Lloyd Webber musical ‘Cats’.
The movie has long been in the works from Universal Pictures. It is not known if the film will use full CGI or with a mix of live-action, as has been the tendency with Disney’s recent live-action remakes.
Tom Hooper, whose credits include ‘The King’s Speech’, ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘The Danish Girl’, is said to be directing while Lee Hall, who wrote ‘Billy Elliot’ and has signed on to write the screenplay for Elton John biopic ‘Rocketman’, has penned a screenplay.
According to The Hashtag Show, Anne Hathaway is in talks to star in a currently unknown role. Hathaway previously worked with Hooper on ‘Les Mis’ and won an Oscar for the role.
The casting is also noteworthy given the actress played Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight Rises' back in 2012.
As well as Hathaway, Universal is reportedly looking at Rihanna for the role of Bombalurina, a key character featured in the musical. However, nothing has been formalized yet.
Interestingly, Anne Hathaway and Rihanna star opposite one another in ‘Ocean’s 8’, which is due out in Irish cinemas next week on June 18th.
Confirmation of the casting should come in the next few weeks as production on ‘Cats’ is expected to begin sometime in September in London.
