With the release of the animated 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' just around the corner, plans seem to already be underway for its female-led sequel.

'Into the Spider-Verse' is Sony Pictures' first foray into a big-screen animated version of their tentpole superhero Spider-Man. The film sees many different versions of Spider-Man cross paths with each-other, with Shameik Moore ('The Get Down') voicing Miles Morales for the first time. Nicholas Cage will also be on-hand to voice Spider-Man Noir, while Hailee Steinfeld will play Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen.

Now, as there will be a plethora of different Spider-Men popping up in the new animated feature, it will also introduce audiences to some female versions of the superhero; this is where the idea seems to have stemmed for the planned sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "seeds have been planted" for a sequel in 'Into the Spider-Verse', but no other details have been revealed.

Here's hoping we will get confirmation on the planned sequel soon. However, it's unlikely to be announced this side of Christmas. Sony Pictures will most likely wait to see how well 'Into the Spider-Verse' performs at the box office first, to see if a sequel should be warranted. But the idea of seeing Spider-Gwen and others such as Spider-Girl, Spider-Woman, and even Black Cat on the big-screen together is very exciting.

Of course, a female-led 'Spider-Man' film won't be the first all-female superhero flick to make traction recently, with Warner Bros. green lighting a Harley Quinn-centred flick for 2020. Revealing the full title, the film is 'Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)'.

'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' releases in Irish cinemas on December 12th.
