We're all in need of entertainment right now and the more communal the better. Covideo parties have been launched and drive in movies have become popular again. Now another option for lovers of filum has arrived in the form of a movie club from the American Film Institute.
The AFI Movie Club aims "to leverage our collective love of film on behalf of optimism in this time of global uncertainty."
It's a daily virtual gathering with the AFI choosing iconic movies every day for followers around the world to watch together. They seek to create "a communal viewing experience during these unprecedented times of social distancing."
It's almost like a cinema!
"AFI’s goal is to live in a world of art above anxiety," said Bob Gazzale, president and CEO. "We’re honored to have Steven Spielberg, the greatest storyteller of our day, lead the way."
Spielberg, who is an AFI trustee, kicked off the club this week. He introduced its inaugural film, 'The Wizard of Oz', in a Youtube video.
He said: "Now I know you think you've seen it but think again. Because right now at this moment in history what better message is there then, 'there's no place like home.'"
Other special guests will announce select AFI Movies of the Day.
To watch the films, audiences can "gather" at AFI.com/MovieClub.
While audiences watch, the daily film selections will include fun facts, family discussion points and exclusive material from the AFI Archive.
