It was the film that introduced Cillian Murphy to many international audiences - and 22 years after it redefined the zombie genre, '28 Days Later' is getting another sequel.

There has already been a sequel to Danny Boyle's 2002 horror/thriller, of course; '28 Weeks Later' was released in 2007 and the plotline followed the efforts of a NATO military force trying to establish a safe zone within London, 28 weeks after the outbreak of the Rage Virus.

There has been much speculation over the years about a potential third film in the series, '28 Months Later' - but now it has been revealed that in fact, Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are working on a sequel called '28 Years Later'.

The duo envisage the new film kick-starting a new trilogy, and will be aiming to sell it to distributors or streamers this year. Alex Garland, who wrote '28 Days Later' but not '28 Weeks Later', is attached to write the proposed trilogy, while Boyle (who directed the first film, but not the second) will direct.

And rather more excitingly, it looks like Cillian Murphy - who played a bike courier who woke up from a coma to find an abandoned London decimated by the virus and with hordes of angry zombies on the loose - could be involved in this new sequel, too; in recent years, he has said that he, Boyle and Garland have often discussed working together again.

"I showed it to my kids recently — some Halloween about four or five years ago — and they loved it," he told NME in 202. "It really stands up, which is amazing for a film that’s 20 years old. So yeah, I love the idea and it’s very appealing to me."
