Last night's Golden Globes ceremony in Los Angeles officially kicked off awards season.

It was a good evening for Ireland, too, with Cillian Murphy scooping his first major award for his role in 'Oppenheimer', which won five awards in total. Dubliner Barry Keoghan was also in attendance as a 'Saltburn' nominee, while 'Poor Things', which was produced by Dublin's Element Pictures, won two awards.

Here are ten of the biggest moments amid the glitz and glamour...

1. Cillian Murphy won his first Golden Globe for 'Oppenheimer'

The Cork man did us proud (and beat Bradley Cooper to the punch, as well as his fellow Irishmen Barry Keoghan and Andrew Scott) with his portrayal of atomic physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer - and also became the first actor to open his victory speech by saying "First question, do I have lipstick all over my nose?"

2. Barry Keoghan's genitalia got a shout-out

The ceremony was hosted by comedian Jo Koy, whose opening monologue bombed - and saw him reference that infamous (one of several, tbh) scene from 'Saltburn' that saw Irish actor Barry Keoghan dancing naked. Koy asked the Dubliner (at 5:40 in the video above): "Where is your penis seated? Down front? That was the real star of the show."

3. 'Poor Things' caused an upset by beating 'Barbie' to Best Comedy

After clocking up nine nominations and razing the global box office last year, big things were expected of 'Barbie'. Yet Yorgos Lanthimos's odd little film about a woman (Emma Stone) who has the brain of an infant transplanted managed to beat Greta Gerwig's film in the 'Best Comedy' category. The Oscars race suddenly looks a lot more interesting.

4. Kirsten Wiig and Will Ferrell stole the show with their presenting bit

While host Jo Koy's puzzlingly joke-free monologues left many scratching their heads, Will Ferrell and Kirsten Wiig came to the rescue by injecting some comedy into the evening. They should have hosted!

5. Taylor Swift was snubbed

'Barbie' losing out to 'Poor Things' in the 'Best Comedy' category was an upset - but Gerwig's film also rocked the apple cart by trouncing Taylor Swift, who was nominated in the 'Cinematic Box Office Achievement' category for her 'Eras' concert film. Swift was even in attendance on the night, but went home empty handed - although she did graciously applaud 'Barbie'.

6. 'Succession''s stars triumphed

'Succession' fans were left bereft when the show came to an end last year - but the awards continue to roll in for its stars. Both Kieran Culkin (Roman) and Sarah Snook (Shiv) won their first Golden Globes; Culkin beat his co-stars Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox to the Lead Actor in a TV Drama award, as well as Pedro Pascal for 'The Last Of Us', joking 'Suck it, Pedro!' - while Snook won Lead Actress in a TV Drama, saying "This show has changed my life, and everybody in it was amazing."

7. 'The Bear' favourites Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri won big

People have been talking about Jeremy Allen White for reasons other than acting since his Calvin Klein ad was launched last week - but last night, 'The Bear' star won his second Golden Globe for Lead Actor in a TV Musical/Comedy, while his co-star Ayo Edebiri won Lead Actress in the same category. White did, however, reference the 'weird week' he's had in the press conference...

8. Lily Gladstone opened her speech in Native American language

Lily Gladstone's award for her superb turn in 'Killers of the Flower Moon' was well-deserved, and the actress accepted her Best Actress in a Motion Picture Golden Globe by paying tribute to her indigenous heritage and speaking in Blackfeet language. "I’m so grateful I can speak even a little bit of my language, which I’m not fluent in, up here," she said. "Because, in this business, Native actors used to speak their lines in English, and the sound mixer would run them backwards to accomplish Native languages on camera."

9. Jennifer Lawrence joked she'd leave if she lost to Emma Stone

Jennifer Lawrence went toe-to-toe with her BFF Emma Stone in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical category - but jokingly mouthed to the camera as the nominees were being announced: "If I don’t win, I’m leaving!". As it turns out, Stone won the award for her role in 'Poor Things' - but J-Law stood up and cheered instead of turning on her heel.

10. Yorgos Lanthimos fangirled over Bruce Springsteen in his winner's speech

The Greek director took to the stage with the cast and producers of 'Poor Things' to accept the award for 'Best Motion Picture - Music or Comedy', but only wanted one thing. "I just want to speak to Bruce Springsteen the whole night," he said, as the camera panned to the music legend looking amused. "We have the same birthday, 23rd of September. He's been my hero since I grew up."
