When we heard that Ryan Gosling was taking on the role of Ken in Greta Gerwig's upcoming 'Barbie' movie, this is not the vision we had in mind.
The 'Barbie' movie co-written by Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah baumbach is well underway with the star-studded cast. Back in April, production released a first look at Margot Robbie as Barbie, giggling in a pink convertible presumably because "life in plastic, it's fantastic".
Now, we've been given a first look at her co-star Ryan Gosling as her hunky 'himbo' boyfriend, Ken. Honestly? We're not sure what we make of it. While Robbie looks like a blonde bombshell dream, Gosling looks like a meme? In a frayed denim vest, the peekaboo torso shot shows his glittering bottle tan, and most confusing of all, a platinum blonde hairdo.
Noah from the 'The Notebook' could never. It's not that we're against 'Blonde-sling' it's just going to take some getting used to, and thankfully, there's a while to go before the movie airs. Set to debut on the 21st of July 2023, the hype around the film is mounting and mounting.
And rightly so — they seem to be adding big names to the cast at the rate of knots. Along with Robbie and Gosling, so far we've got America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Issa Rae, and Michael Cera.
Variety reported that even though the plot hasn't been disclosed yet, there are rumours swirling that there are a number of Barbie and Kens within the story. Liu said of the filming process, "I wish I could just show you what we do day-to-day because it’s crazy".
As for the question on everyone's lips — no, 'Barbie Girl' by Aqua will not appear in the film. Boo. Ulrich Møller-Jørgensen, manager of band member Lene Nystrøm, disclosed to Variety that "The song will not be used in the movie" without further explanation.
'Barbie' comes out on the 21st of July 2023.
