'The Northman' director Robert Eggers is going full steam ahead with his new project 'Noseratu' after news that Bill Skarsgård and Lily-Rose Depp have been cast.
In the new reimagining, 'Nosferatu' is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Depp) in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire (Skarsgård) who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.
The original 'Nosferatu' released in 1922 and starred Max Schreck as Count Orlok, a vampire who plagues a town. Directed by German filmmaker Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, it's widely regarded as the one of the most influential horrors in cinema history
Eggers will direct and pen the script. He also produces alongside Jeff Robinov, John Graham, Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus.
The horror director originally struggled to get the project off the ground due to delays and schedule conflicts.
"I've been trying so hard," Eggers told Indie Wire in April. "And I just wonder if Murnau's ghost is telling me, like, you should stop." He added, "I don’t know. Maybe Murnau’s telling me I don’t have the right."
Earlier this year reports said that Harry Styles, who was originally attached to the project, had pulled out last minute due to scheduling conflicts.
Up until now the film seemed to be in limbo, but the new cast announcements have breathed new life into the project. Anya Taylor-Joy, who was also set to star in 'Nosferatu' gave up her role due to scheduling conflicts. This left the door open for Depp to take the leading role.
Due to its rocky start, 'Nosferatu' took a back seat to Eggers' Viking epic 'The Northman' which released in April of this year.
