Irish actors Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott will star alongside one another in Andrew Haigh's new movie 'Strangers'.

Claire Foy ('The Crown') and Jamie Bell ('Rocketman') make up the rest of the main cast. The film is loosely based on a 1987 Japanese novel by Taichi Yamada.

According to Variety, 'Strangers' follows screenwriter Adam (Scott) who, one night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, has a chance encounter with his mysterious neighbour Harry (Mescal) that punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As Adam and Harry get closer, Adam is pulled back to his childhood home where he discovers that his long-dead parents (Foy and Bell) are both living and look the same age as the day they died over 30 years ago.

The film is directed by Andrew Haigh, who's last work was last year's BBC miniseries 'The North Water' starring Colin Farrell. Notable other works include the Oscar nominated '45 Years', a romantic drama starring Charlotte Rampling.

The casting marks a continuous line of upcoming work for the busy Mescal. After his rise to fame with 2020's 'Normal People', the Kildare native has had a string of success with films like Maggie Gyllenhaal's 'The Lost Daughter' and 'Aftersun', which was just recently picked up at Cannes after a positive reaction.

Mescal has five other films in line, in various stages of production. Included in the list is 'Foe', a sci-fi thriller where Mescal will co-star with Saoirse Ronan as a young married couple.

Scott, has been an established presence since his excellent performance as Moriarty in BBC's 'Sherlock'. He then shot further to fame as the Hot Priest in 'Fleabag', alongside Phoebe Waller-Bridge. He's set to star in the upcoming Prime original series 'Ripley'.
