You'd think after the so-so reviews for 'The Lion King', 'Mulan', 'Aladdin', and 'Maleficent' that Disney might decide to pump the brakes on adapting its entire back catalogue of animated classics.
In fact, the only one that's ever had any kind of luck with audiences and critics alike has been 'The Jungle Book', and even then, it wasn't what one would call ecstatic. Either way, Disney is pressing ahead and its latest effort is 2002's 'Lilo & Stitch'.
Although the remake was first announced in 2018, it's only today that Disney has confirmed that 'Crazy Rich Asians' director Jon M. Chu is set to take on directing duties. As far as casting goes or a relase date, it's too early to tell who and when we'll see any of that.
'Lilo & Stitch' follows the adventures a young Hawaiian girl and her teenage sister who adopt an alien creature that they name Stitch, bringing it into their ohana, or family. The movie was popular enough to warrant a number of direct-to-video sequels and a TV spinoff series, but now it's time at last for a live-action remake.
Jon M. Chu is becoming more in demand as the years go by. 2018's 'Crazy Rich Asians' was a box-office smash, and the likelihood is that his next effort to head to the cinema, 'In The Heights', could well end up being an Oscar contender, what with it being written by and starring Lin Manuel Miranda of 'Hamilton' fame. Not only that, Chu is also working on Disney+'s follow-up series to the '80s fantasty classic, 'Willow'.
In the meantime, here's the song everybody knows from 'Lilo & Stitch'.
