Warner Bros. Discovery will launch new division, DC Studios, finally following in the footsteps of Marvel.
Warner Bros. Discovery has put James Gunn in charge of DC Studios, a brand-new division following on from the company's big change-up over the past few months. The director and writer will co-lead with producer Peter Safran by his side.
Gunn and Safran will both get the title of co-CEO of DC Studios when November 1 comes around. The new venture will replace all DC Films and any future TV or animated projects coming down the line. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn will focus on the creative side of the studios while Safran will be in charge of the business affairs. WB Discovery will still be overseen by CEO David Zaslav, and Gunn will still continue to direct upcoming projects for DC - he'll just get more of an over-arching input across all other projects not under his direction.
Those who have been paying attention to James Gunn's work will know that this is great news for DC fans. The DC films, in particular, have struggled immensely to set themselves apart from the Disney juggernaut that is Marvel Studios. Now with Gunn and Safran on board, hopefully, this will be a thing of the past.
Gunn, during his being fired and unfired from Disney, quickly jumped ship to DC to helm 'The Suicide Squad' sequel/reboot which hit cinemas in 2021. He also created the film's spin-off series 'Peacemaker'. Of course, Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' is the most popular movie franchise he has helmed to date - the third (and final) instalment hits cinemas next year and there's a Holiday Special on its way this November.
Safran, on the other hand, may not be as well known, but he's had close ties with Warner Bros. for a number of years. He's been a producer on a number of the more well-received DC projects such as 'Aquaman' and 'Shazam!', but has also worked with James Wan on his 'Annabell' and 'The Conjuring' universes.
James Gunn and Peter Safran will now be in charge of upcoming 2023 releases such as 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' and 'Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom'. The drama surrounding Ezra Miller and the release of 'The Flash' will likely fall under their control too. What won't fall under their control, however, are the likes of 'The Batman' franchise with Robert Pattinson and 'Joker: Folie à Deux' with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.
The news comes after $90 million 'Batgirl' starring Brendan Fraser and Leslie Grace was canned deep into its post-production stage.
