The new Captain America is playing coy about the future of his upgraded character.

Anthony Mackie will next appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the new and improved Sam Wilson - but when's his next appearance?

Marvel has dubbed Phases Four, Five and Six of their Cinematic Universe as "The Multiverse Saga", with all sorts of new and sequel movies and TV shows on the agenda (including 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' this November, which will close out Phase Four).

Now, the last time we saw Mackie on screen was in 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier', which saw him go from being Captain America's side piece to the full-on Cap himself. The next time we are expected to see him will be in the fourth Captain America movie, entitled 'New World Order', which won't be released until 2024.

Variety wanted to know some more details about the film. Asking the 44-year-old actor what's in store for fans, he said: "They’re definitely very inclusive. When we did 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier', [writer] Malcolm Spellman and I talked at length about what that character was turning into, what we wanted him to be, what we wanted that narrative to be.

"Now with Malcolm writing this 'Captain America', it’s the exact same thing. We’ve talked and communicated about what we want that story to be going forward and how it’ll fit in this new Marvel universe. You definitely get the idea of collaboration, but you don’t get to tell them what it’s going to be."

So, just as you might imagine, no Marvel beef. But when he was asked if he might show up in 'Thunderbolts' (which releases just after 'Cap 4'), he... also hasn't a clue.

He joked about joining Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, David Harbour and co in the film: "I have no idea. You know how it works. They call you the week before and are like, 'We own your ass. Come get in the movie'."

Anthony Mackie has been cast in a non-Marvel project that is in the pipeline - a TV series based on the super popular PlayStation game 'Twisted Metal'. He'll lead the cast alongside Neve Campbell, Stephanie Beatriz, Thomas Haden Church and the voice of Will Arnett as Sweet Tooth.
