As the first portable episode of the popular and stunning Uncharted franchise, it is unsurprising that this has been, by far, the most anticipated game on the new Vita handheld. Those worried that the lack of involvement of developers Naughty Dog can breath a sigh of relief as Golden Abyss manages to deliver the PS3 experience to a handheld - so long as you are willing to accommodate the removal of multiplayer mode.

This game reminds my of the first PSP God of War, in that both games offer nothing new to the main franchise itself but instead delivers a great game that highlights the potential of the handheld system. Golden Abyss is a prequel and delivers the exact same climbing, shooting, smart alec quip formula that fans have come to love. Indeed, this game, and the series as a whole, sticks rather too closely to formula and it can feel a bit tiresome - particularly if you have recently being playing Uncharted 3. The few changes to the core mechanic are unfortunately problematic. The climbing and shooting sections do not feel quite as balanced as before and the new female sidekick will not join in any combat. While it is refreshing that one of the character's vocal opposition to violence isn't instantly forgotten, it does mean the game will fall into rescue / escort mode at points which I did not find a welcomed addition.

Touch and tilt controls are also heavily incorporated to showcase just what the Vita can do. For most part they are optional and unobtrusive - when given the choice I preferred just to use the control pad as my fingers were already there. Some actions though do require the Vita exclusive controls, most notably the time wasting 'puzzles' involving wiping dirt of an object or turning it around to see every angle. Overused and dull but at least they are quick and easy. One area I found immensely improved by the motion controls was the camera. It felt incredibly natural to hold the Vita as an actual camera to aim my shot. Unfortunately, the game is quite fussy in requiring each photo be perfectly angled / focused so after repeatedly failing to get 1 of the photos 100% correct, I gave up on what was otherwise an engaging side mission.

While the game is unquestionably impressive visually, it does seem to lack something. Whether through the limitations of a handheld or the removal of Naughty Dog, there is no real equivalent of the ship sinking sequence or the burning château from Uncharted 3. Still, despite not been able to completely hold its own against its PS3 siblings, Golden Abyss still is an incredibly entertaining adventure.

While lack of multiplayer will of course hurt replay value, it has been a long while since there has been such a strong launch title. A must buy.
