Like the films, Toy Story games have come and gone. However, unlike the films, they generally haven't been very good. Of course there was something in them for youngsters, the chance to take control of Buzz and Woody alone would have easily justified the price paid for what really were basic platformers, which, had that heavenly Pixar/Disney gloss not been applied, would quickly have been forgotten.
Thankfully, Toy Story 3 has tried achieving something the previous efforts failed to do. Use an ingenious cast of characters, a beautifully created world and adapt it into a game that can appeal both to the younger and older gamer.
The main reason for this is the new Toy Box Mode, in which you are free to explore and interact with all the characters you know and love as you see fit, taking up various quests, from racing to decorating and adapting the town itself. Naturally, there is also a story mode that mirrors the one seen in the film, but the Toy Box is where most gamers will return, simply because completing one quest so often opens up several more, hinting at a depth that is as surprising and unexpected as it welcome.
The best addition to the Toy Story gaming catalogue.
