Well, it's finally here. For all the hustle and bluster of the Ryse and Forza 5 and other launch titles, the Xbox One's first proper “must-buy” has arrived in stores, but is it the holy grail of games that Microsoft has been holding out for? Is the good enough to convince those who have been holding off on purchasing a next-gen console to push them into finally forking over the money? Is it, in short, a Must-Buy?
Well.... Yes. And no. But mostly yes. The issue, if you want to call it that, is also a core selling point for the game, in that it is SOLELY an online multiplayer game. There is no solo campaign to play here, it's just you and five friends or strangers, against six other friends or strangers, shooting each other to bits. Even the multiplayer aspect doesn't concern itself with much plot; you're on one side of war, and you are fighting against people on the other side of the war. Aim and shoot.
Of course, if you're a massive fan of online shoot ‘em ups, then this is going to be heaven for you, and over the course of time, it's only going to get better. Kicking off there are a small number of different types of matches to get involved in - all slight variations of stuff you've seen before in the likes of Halo or Call Of Duty - but there is scope for these to both improve in quality and increase in quantity.
Even as it stands though, TitanFall is something of an addictive revelation. Playing as a jet-packing wearing futuristic parkour runner, blasting other folk with your huge array of impressive weapons, before hearing that your Titan is ready to be deployed, and watching it getting dropped from the spaceships above, crashing to the Earth, and you climbing aboard, sacrificing speed for brute power... It's an incredible rush, and one that very few games lately could boast to match.
So there you have it. If you're looking for something heavy on plot and atmosphere, then you will not be satisfied here. But if you already have an Xbox One, love games to be literally nothing but fun, and love blowing things up, then Titanfall is a must buy.
