Despite its name recognition, Call of Duty's popularity has waned in recent years.

2016's effort, Infinite Warfare, was widely regarded as one of the weakest entries in the franchise whilst Black Ops III also received middling reviews from critics and players alike. According to a report by YouTube gaming channel TheFamilyVideoGamers and subsequently verified by Eurogamer, this year's Call of Duty will be set in World War II.

Call Of Duty began as a World War II-era shooter, following in the footsteps of Medal Of Honor, and subsequently moved into modern and futuristic settings as the franchise progressed. The last Call of Duty set in the era was 2008's World At War, which featured the voice talents of Gary Oldman and Kiefer Sutherland.

It's not yet known precisely when Call of Duty: World War II will be released, but a recent earning call by publishers Activision confirmed that the next instalment in the franchise would be around Christmas 2017, and promised that the franchise would "return to its roots", in reference to the zero-g and sci-fi elements in Infinite Warfare.
