Shift 2 Unleashed is a visceral racing simulator where the events are fast, loud and unforgiving. The game includes a range of modern and imaginary tracks and although there isn't an awful lot of cars to race, the customization options for each one is impressive. Players can earn driving experience points online and offline and when they level up they can unlock new race track or buy new cars. The game also includes an impressive metagame known as the Autolog. This feature player's best times on each of the 30 courses to an online leaderboard and encourages friends to beat it.
The car models look pretty realistic and for once the driver view is actually an effective way of playing the game. Newbies be warned, this game is tough. I spent a lot of time trying to get by opponents - "You need to be more aggressive" the commentator screamed - only to end up crashing into a wall. However, I was somewhat consoled by the impressive crash effects during which my car flipped over and smashed into little pieces.
At least I looked good doing it.
